The Gladiators opened up Tuesday night’s game in Hartland with a 9-0 run but were unable to maintain that momentum throughout the game as they eventually fell to the Eagles 42-39 in a non-league contest.
“They’re a good team,” Hartland’s Coach Blouin said after the game. “They like to get up and run and they are good at what they do. They were ready in the early going and it caught our kids by surprise.” When asked about the first time out Blouin replied, “We just needed to get on the same page and do the right things on the floor”.
The timeout seemed to have the right effect as the Eagles began to chip away at the lead and by the end of the first quarter they had cut the deficit to 1 trailing 11-10. In the second quarter Hartland continued the comeback and by halftime, the Eagles had a 23-20 lead.
The second half found the Eagles not quite able to pull away from Fowlerville. By the end of the third quarter, the Glads had pulled back to within 1 at 33-32. Hartland extended that lead to 5 with only 1:24 left in the game but once again, Fowlerville managed to cut the lead to 3 with just 25.4 seconds left.
A 3-point shot by the Glads with 7 seconds left on the clock was waved off after hitting the top of the backboard and Fowlerville had to foul immediately on the Eagle inbound. Hartland missed the front end of the 1 and 1 with Fowlerville pulling down the rebound. The Gladiators launched a 3-point shot from midcourt as time expired but it fell short preserving the victory for Hartland.
After the game Fowlerville Head Coach Fred Hackett laid out what his plans for the night had been. “Our game plan was to push the ball and hit some buckets in transition we did great for that first two minutes or so and then we got away from it and then we found it again and got away from it.” He also gave a lot of credit to Hartland, “Hartland did a great job on the offensive glass and it is hard to get transition baskets when you are getting out rebounded.”
Konian Paul led Hartland with 11 points on the night while Carson Miller added 10 points. Fowlerville scoring was led by Dan Judd with 12 points and Sam McDowell chipping in 10.
The win improves Hartland to 2-2 on the season while Fowlerville suffers their first defeat of the season and drops to 3-1.
