Howell (5-3) v Novi (4-4)

Hartland (5-3) v Salem (3-5)

Brighton(7-1) @ South Lyon (4-4)

South Lyon East (1-7) v Pinckney (3-5)

Pinckney (4-4) @ Waverly (2-6)

Brighton 41 Walled Lake Northern 26

Walled Lake Western 28 Hartland 3

Pinckney 6 Waterford Kettering 2 (No, not a typo)

Waterford Mott 28 Howell 10

Fowlerville 24 Lakewood 21

At this point, Brighton is in the playoffs with 7 wins. Howell and Hartland could guarantee a playoff spot next week with wins. Fowlerville, with a win next week, would move to 5-4 and could sneak into the playoffs as well.

Wow, we are into week 8 of the football season and the third week that I have tried to prove my ignorance by picking the High School football contests in Livingston County. I did improve a bit last week. After going 2-2 in my first week, I managed to scrape a 3-1 record last week missing only on the Fowlerville game. This will be a bit tougher week as there are a full five games on the slate as it is KLAA crossover week!

Brighton(6-1) @ Walled Lake Northern(5-2)

The first of our crossover games is Brighton traveling to WL Northern. Brighton's only loss of the season came to Hartland, a game that they lost their starting quarterback and he isn't expected back until the October 23 game against South Lyon. Northern has two losses on the season, one to Livonia Stevenson and the other to narrow loss to Walled Lake Western who is 7-0 on the year. Northern is averaging 34 points on the year while the Bulldogs are surviving on defense and only giving up 11 on average. Brighton still won't score a lot this week but their defense will be more than up to the challenge

Brighton 16

Walled Lake Northern 13

Howell(5-2) at Waterford Mott(4-3)

Mott has losses to South Lyon, Walled Lake Western and Walled Lake Northern while Howell has dropped games to Grand Blanc and Brighton and winning this game puts them into the playoffs. Four of the five Highlander wins however have come against teams with losing records. Against teams with winning records, Howell is 1-2. Look for that trend to continue this week.

Howell 27

Waterford Mott 33

Hartland(5-2) @ Walled Lake Western(7-0)

Hartland has losses to Canton and Howell but they do have a marquee win against Brighton this season. Walled Lake Western has taken on all comers and for the most part, has won in convincing fashion. Week 1 against Lowell and two weeks ago against rival Walled Lake Northern were their two closest games. Hartland needs one more win to guarantee a playoff spot but don't look for the Eagles to get that win this week.

Hartland 14

Walled Lake Western 42

Pinckney(2-5) @ Waterford Kettering(3-4)

Ok, now that I have the right match-up for this week we will see the Pirates try to take down the Captains in what would be an awesome literary contest! Pinckney is on a roll winning their last two games and Kettering has lost their last three. In high school, momentum and how the team feels about itself are important. Look for Pinckney to sink the Captains in what will be a close game.

Waterford Kettering 28

Fowlerville(3-4) v Lakewood(7-0)

Last week Fowlerville had a chance to take a major step to the playoffs with a victory over Ionia only to fall 20-16. Lakewood comes into this at 7-0 and rolling. I expect the Glads to keep this one close but ultimately fall to Lakewood.

Last week was my first week actually picking games and I was a very mediocre 2-2 on the week missing on the Hartland win over Brighton and the Pinckney win over Grand Blanc. Hopefully we will fare a bit better this week although with injuries, there are a couple of games that could be toss-ups.

Getting things started!

Brighton (5-1) v Howell (5-1)

Homecoming in Brighton might not be the boost that you would expect for the Bulldogs coming on the heels of their 14-7 loss last week to Hartland. A game in which they lost their starting quarterback due to an ankle injury. Howell on the other hand is coming off of a victory against Milford (0-6) and is looking to clinch a playoff berth as well. Look for Brighton to come back with a new offensive plan to adapt to the QB change and to take home the Little Brown Jug in a tight contest.

Howell 14

Pinckney (1-5) @ Milford (0-6)

Pinckney swung into the win column last week in surprising fashion taking it to Grand Blanc 38-15 while the Mustangs of Milford played Howell strong in the first half before letting things get away from them in the second and losing 31-14. With only pride to play for at this point for both squads, I don’t see home field advantage helping the Mustangs much. Look for the Pirates to stretch it to 2 wins.

Milford 16

Hartland (4-2) @ Grand Blanc (4-2)

I have never decided if the up/down theory applies to high school football but if it does, this would be a classic example. Hartland is coming off of a HUGE 14-7 homecoming victory over Brighton while Grand Blanc is coming off of an equally huge loss to previously winless Pinckney. Hartland is 3-0 on the road while Grand Blanc is 3-0 at home so something has to give this week. I am throwing the up/down theory out the window as Hartland continues with the momentum from last and wins this one.

Hartland 28

Grand Blanc 22

Fowlerville (3-3) @ Ionia (1-5)

The Glads went into Williamston and pulled off the upset last Friday night on a last second field goal and are riding high with a chance to the playoffs if they win out. Ionia on the other hand is working on building towards next season. Fowlerville wins this one setting up next week’s crucial game against Lakewood.
